The exact cause of migraines is still unknown, but you’re more likely to get them if a close family member also gets them.

Factors known to trigger migraines include:

• Menstruation - before or during your period

• Anxiety and depression

• Stress and tiredness

• Irregular eating patterns or skipping meals

• Too much caffeine

• Lack of exercise

Just before you have a migraine you may feel:

• fatigue

• food cravings or thirst

• mood changes

• a stiff neck

• peeing more

You may also experience aura symptoms, such as:

• problems with your sight, such as seeing zigzag lines or flashing lights

• numbness or a tingling that feels like pins and needles

• feeling dizzy

• difficulty speaking

There are three types of migraines with different symptoms:

Migraine without aura - these have no warning signs

Migraine with aura - these have warning signs (e.g. seeing zigzag lines, numbness or tingling, feeling dizzy or difficulty speaking.)

Silent migraine -  this is a migraine aura without a headache, you may see flashing lights.

Patients who are over 18 but under 65, have been diagnosed with migraines before and have migraines with or without aura.
